Innovation & Strategy
Before the establishment of Front Row Films in 2020, founder Michael Kaufer spent years building a foundation rooted in access, education, and creative excellence within the Deaf and hard of hearing filmmaking community. Through early work with Deaf Film Camp and other immersive programs, he helped mentor Deaf youth and emerging artists, introducing them to the craft of filmmaking through hands-on instruction, collaboration, and professional-grade tools.
These early initiatives—featured in publications including Adirondack Life and other industry outlets—highlighted a growing movement: Deaf and hard of hearing storytellers gaining the skills, confidence, and platforms to share their voices. Working alongside accomplished filmmakers, instructors, and production teams, Michael developed extensive experience across directing, producing, education, and program coordination, while collaborating with a wide range of filmmaker companies and creative innovators.
In 2020, this work evolved into the formal launch of Front Row Films, an organization committed to making visual arts accessible to Deaf and hard of hearing communities worldwide. Through education, workshops, consulting, and program coordination, Front Row Films supports both youth and experienced filmmakers—bridging mentorship with innovation.
Today, Front Row Films continues to foster an inclusive and vibrant arts landscape by expanding access, amplifying Deaf voices, and ensuring that visual storytelling is a space where everyone belongs.
